What is stigma and how to tackle it
One in four people suffer some sort of mental disorder during their lives. In Spain, the estimate is that 9% of the population actually has a mental disorder. Even though it is foreseen that the figure will grow in the next few years and that it affects the entire population equally, mental disorders are still big enigmas for society.
Anxiety, depression, anorexia or schizophrenia are common and very close to all of us. They can affect a sister, a mother, a friend, a workmate or even us personally. Even so, to talk about mental disorder is considered to be a taboo subject quite frequently.
This section of " 1decada4" (1in4) is an attempt to contribute in making mental disorders something visible, for it to be known about objectively as well as the consequences of stigma. In sum, it invites the readers to re-think our ideas and attitudes concerning mental disorders.
